Fashion, seems to be getting a little bit too boring these days.

Unpopular opinion, but I really hate the whole hipster character glasses trend. YOU HAVE PERFECT EYESIGHT. YOU ARE NOT TINA FEY. YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE WEARING GLASSES THAT COVER HALF YOUR FACE.

/rant over.

i agree. this is not even fashion, but clones of each other. everyone's wearing too much eyeliner, messy high ponytail with fringe swept to the side and some fashion accessory that clashes with their entire outfit.

you should have seen the number of under 16 girls parading around their free-flow eyeliner and messy hair buns on top of their heads. they fit into a category of their own.

Yeah, I don't get the whole "geek"-cover-half-the-face look. Especially if they cannot carry it off for the love of trashiness. The other day I saw this girl with nice clothes and everything and the moment she turned around and I saw the geek glasses, it just spoilt my initial great impression of her :(
siti_stereositi_stereo on February 1st, 2009 05:07 am (UTC)
boring? I don't think its boring. Compared to 2-3 years ago, the style youngters now have progressed since. I just think that it has come to a halt now where everything is stagnant and standard. Blazers, leggings, F21.... it seems that theyre gonna stay for quite sometime.

And geekiness, it depends on how you look at it. I love the geekiness in Cecilia Mendez for Chadwick Tyler. Also Sarah Palin. Its like geekiness with edge.
Stefanie: FOTCbuffseeds on February 1st, 2009 08:11 am (UTC)
I agree with you, this isn't necessarily boring, and the fashion among Singaporean youngsters has definitely progressed. But at the same time, a majority of them are still following what's the current trend - for example, everywhere you turn now, you see girls in fedoras, over-sized glasses and patent leggings. Even if it works as an outfit, it seems to be more about going along with trends rather than having a personal style.

I definitely love geeks, especially geek girls, but these people aren't geeks at all. They don't seem to have spunk or wit, or adore Star Wars and Battlestar Galactica. They're just merely outfits that don't go along with their identity.

They can be cute... I used to hate those glasses until I saw what can be done and I own a pair now and proud of it heeheez
Stefaniebuffseeds on February 3rd, 2009 12:28 pm (UTC)
I actually adore that collection... and those glasses CAN be uber cute on some people if done right. But a lot of wearers are just solely wearing it for the whole trend thing.
jaeaxe: crowd abovejaeaxe on February 2nd, 2009 03:24 am (UTC)
seriously, so what if the trend is geek glasses and everyone seems to be adopting it?
I think that the trend, it's better than no trend (read:shorts, Li'l Miss Tees and slippers.)
Besides all these will create the nolstalgia of the 2005-2010 or whenever it lasts till. A nolstalgia not unlike the 70s shoulder pads (huge glasses as well) 80-90s bug hair and tight hug-calves-broad-thighs jeans.
SonI'd say, just like the gladiators, bear them. It's what trends are about.

WHAT THE HELL ARE THEY WEARING?! the green shoes are cool, but it doesn't match the dress, really.
Carliamissycarlia on February 2nd, 2009 05:09 am (UTC)
just my own opinion.
i would rather girls dressed up like in eg: bunzz/bangles/fringe/eyeliner.
then seeing teenage girls starting to parade around in ahlianzzz outfit.
idk, whether you girls agree, but i prefer people to be in the hipster crowd then ahlianzz crowd.
Laurapoptarttt on February 2nd, 2009 08:14 am (UTC)
I don't think we're to judge what looks good on who/what doesn't, what should be worn/what shouldn't or even how "original" one might look. I mean face it, we're all stuck in trends. Everything is a trend. The only difference is how we wear and mix them about. The "geek" glasses have been sported by many people that's why people don't like it anymore, as it's not "original". The fluorescent color trend thing (aka nu rave) also was pretty much overdone and as a result people stopped liking it altogether because everyone wants to look unique. The whole drapey Rick Owens trend coming out right now is going to be bland in a couple of months with F21 coming up with carbon-copies of the designer garb. So basically the problem begins with people wanting exclusivity.. even I can admit to that.

On a completely different note, I love Candia's high tops :)
Stefanie: 30R3buffseeds on February 2nd, 2009 03:03 pm (UTC)
Ok I definitely agree with you that everything at one point is a trend, and that most people are aiming for exclusivity and originality when it comes to style. But are those people who put together outfits solely based on the whole hipster trend being original by doing so? They might think they are because a majority of Singaporeans don't dress like that, and yes, they might look kickass in those outfits, but really, all of them look the same to me, and it beats the point of trying to look unique when you just look like the next NAFA student that comes along.

I think it is ridiculous to criticise people who follow trends.
I mean there is no sin in doing so?
what is more, aren't we all following trends of some sort?
nobody is original - other than designers.
but then again, designers sometimes get inspiration from the past, various elements of some sort.

I think it is better to follow trends than wearing shorts and shirts wherever you go.

girlfriends need to sit. down.

eh the issue here is not about following trends. i mean trends are there to be followed what. it's just about being blind and lapping it up, esp all at once. i think it's as simple as, if it looks good on you & you pull it off then well done. if you dont, then why are you still wearing it.

on a post-related note,
lol @ the guy scratching his nose in the first pic, it was the first thing i noticed. rere's watch is cute with the gold/black. & the colours that candia has on really pop and look totally random but somehow kind of work for her. helps that her dress is black & not some crazy colour.
Stefanie: TO3buffseeds on February 2nd, 2009 03:08 pm (UTC)
LOL yeah okay, I admit I have been rather bitchy about this subject, but damn, I am sick of seeing girls who wear entire outfits based on this whole hipster thing. Like you, I don't mind the act of following trends, it's the whole sheep syndrome thing that annoys me, when everyone starts to look the same. Even if they are good looking sheep, I still wish to see a variation in style here. Or at least have styles that match personalities instead of being disparate or whatever. I mean, I don't have the greatest personal style, but at least it's my own, and it's based on my character.

because during my time of secondary period, girls were all donning ahlian outfits!

Just my personal opinion, but people should be expressing their personal statement(s) through their clothes and fashion instead of slavishly following trends from a runway.

What's "hipster"?
Stefaniebuffseeds on February 3rd, 2009 12:41 pm (UTC)
You can check this out, it's a pretty accurate feature on the whole hipster culture, although the Singaporean one is a less douche-baggy variation of it.

A rather stereotypical definition but this is based on my observations of Singaporean "hipster" kids - Usually identified by scarves, ironic tee-shirts in monotone colours, a love for Starbucks coffee and cigarettes, claims to dislike anything that is mainstream when their favourite show is Gossip Girl, thick rimmed over-sized glasses, fedoras, quickness to call everyone who isn't in on their trend conformists, and hate being identified as hipsters.

and what about those indie headbands? doesnt it seem to be in the trend like last yr as well? i mean i've personally seen alot of girls(or even guys) with headbands...til now? buffseeds, you can add that on to your list haha

but anyway it seems like people are dying down in that headband fashion...everyone's outta that phase.

they are blair waldorf inspired :-)
yknow, ever since gossipgirls, beverylyhills90210.

(Anonymous) on February 4th, 2009 11:25 am (UTC)
Sigh. No offence to buffseeds, or other dissers for the matter but why do you people care so much about who's "pretentiously trendy" and "who's not?"?

I have nothing against any of you and am neutral about this whole trendy people thing and apologise beforehand if what I am about to say has already been said in comments above, but anyway here's my 2cents worth.

Personally I find it sad when people follow trends blindly even though the said trends don't suit them, like you said the whole hipster culture...yes I agree with that.

But then again, who are you to judge who is for real and who is not? Or which trends are "annoying" and "overused"? Or if that girl who walked by you wearing gladiators is pretentious?

It's all a matter of personal choice, and decisions in life. If they're comfortable with the way they are, and are willing to dress and behave in a certain way (albeit "hipster" and "drinking at "starfucks"), let them be. It's none of your business anyway, it's the way they want to live their life! Right...?

The more you discern and try to draw the line between the 'pretentious' ones and the ones who aren't 'pretentious because they have their own style', it ironically makes you more pretentious because YOU are the one judging people, and not the other way round. Totally defeats the purpose of defining who is and who isn't because honestly, it makes you annoying because you're judging. (yes repeating the word again because I am trying to emphasise and make a point here.)
All they did was wear the clothes they wanted to wear anyway.

This sounds cliche but ultimately it's what inside that matters. I know fashion is superficial but it doesn't give you a solid reason to condemn others.

Alright, good day y'all.
(Anonymous) on February 4th, 2009 01:02 pm (UTC)

yeah buffeseeds, why do you care so much? Sure, they may dress identically and not have a sense of creativity, but what does it have to do with you? Do they force you to don a pair of gladiator sandals, and impose their fashion values on you? I don't think they do, so neither should you.

You may think you are able to inject individuality into your outfits unlike these fashion clones. But so what? After reading all your comments, I can't help but feel that you derive confidence from putting down these people.

Oops, or am I wrong to judge you in this way? Maybe I am, and maybe so are you when you judge these people as hipsters who "put together outfits based on the inclusion of those certain items that would make them appear "indie", instead of working on a personal style that would accurately go along with their character and tastes."

OMG ITS FASHION NOT ROCKET SCIENCE. I don't wake up in the morning and go, hmm does this pair of leggings accurately go along with my character and taste? omg no i don't want to be seen as a hipster... no no no I cannot wear it and risk being slammed by an online loser.

You are very eloquent in raising your point of view, and I do agree with the fact that Singaporeans may experience the sheep syndrome. But I do not constantly reiterate my point, and would rather let the way I dress speak for itself.

Since you are SO good at showing us how uncreative Singaporean dressers can be, then why not show us how you dress! If you are so confident in your stand, then you should lead in example by posting pictures of your own outfits and going "HERE HIPSTERZ, This is how you should dress! As you can see, my outfit goes along with my character and taste and accurately conveys my personal style. It may not be perfect, but at least I have originality. Take that, hipsterz cower my fashion sense"

This has to be the longest debate over this issue I've seen in this community. I personally like what Candia's wearing, it's weird and awkward in a good way. Who are we to judge a person's personal style by say, the geek specs they wear or gladiator sandals? Since when has it become what we wear instead of how we wear them? I don't care if someone's decked out in $3 thrifted flannel shirts if they look good, and likewise there'll be some people who extrudes zero personality even in comme des garcons.
(Anonymous) on February 6th, 2009 03:44 pm (UTC)
